Slaves were not referred to as people, and were treated as objects to be owned or disposed of. They had no legal rights and didn't gain any rights until the Roman Empire (27 B.C.)
The Roman Scourge is shown above, it was made of ox-hide leather and in the knots at the end were small, sharp pieces of metal. This is the most common object slaves were struck by when punished.
