Domestic There was over 55 different occupations a household slave could hold: barber, butler, cook, hairdresser, handmaid, nursery attendant, teacher, secretary, seamstress, accountant, and physician. Large elite households known as a domus, were kept up by hundreds of slaves. The living conditions of domestic slaves attached to a domus, also known as a familia urbana, were superior in slave condition terms.
Public Public slaves were not subjected to only a single master. A public slave, known as a servus publicus, was owned by the city, and worked in public buildings and temples. They performed simple tasks as being servants to officials, and even some well qualified slaves did office work for pay. During the Republic a slave could be freed if they were deemed eligible.
